We have all read the Ten Commandments and understand what we aren't supposed to do based on God's law, yet what was God trying to say to our hearts when He gave Moses these 10 requirements?
In Exodus chapter 20 there's a list of what "Thou Shalt not do" but why? Through Moses, God is sending a message to Israel that they could not save themselves. And that their selfishness and their will was digging them into a deeper hole than they realized. The Old Testament within itself holds 613 laws. The 613 commandments include Jewish ceremonial laws and rituals, as well as the scribal law.
In terms of grace God sent Jesus to full fill all of the Old Testament, In Matthew 5:17 Jesus Says, “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill."
God's grace saved us from selfishness to show us what selflessness looked like. Jesus laid down His life for us to have life. I challenge you to take a good look at the Ten Commandments and notice that God wasn't setting a bunch of rules and regulations; He was sending us a self-reflection list to help us change. For years the Israelites had to provide sacrifices and offerings for the forgiveness of sins and now we no longer have to provide for God because in God's great love and mercy, He sent Grace to save us! He provided a way out for us. It's up to us to receive this selfless act of love.
